With wetlands of rich biodiversity and an extensive mangrove forest, Sungei Buloh was first opened as a Nature Park on 1993 and has expanded as a Wetland Reserve to 202 hectares of mangroves, mudflats, ponds and forests, providing an even larger sanctuary for the flora and fauna that call it home. Description: Be transported back in time to 1960s Singapore as you embark on a trip to the nearby island of Pulau Ubin. Home to one of Singapore’s last villages or kampongs, the island still retains the rustic beauty and simplicity of a bygone era. This trip will visit Chek Jawa Wetlands, a mosaic of mangroves, seagrasses, mudflats and coastal forests. We will also visit examples of current and planned mangrove rehabilitation on the island.

Field Trip to Pulau Semakau – Singapore’s Landfill and Island Mangroves

Description: Come visit Semakau Landfill to discover the rich biodiversity and nature, while learning about how waste is managed in Singapore. This half-day tour will take you around Semakau’s operations and facilities and also show the measures that were taken so that the marine ecosystems around Semakau Landfill continue to flourish and explore nearby habitats. The trip will also visit natural and restored mangroves on the island. Today, Semakau’s coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangroves provide habitats for many rare and endangered species of plants and animals.

Behind the Scenes Tour of Singapore Botanic Garden and Herbarium

Description: The Singapore Botanic Garden, established in 1859, is one of the region’s oldest gardens and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Highlights of this tour includes a visit to the Herbarium which stores physical records of reference plant materials, some dating as far back as 1790 and a guided tour of the Singapore Botanic Garden. The Herbarium houses a main collection of 750,000 specimens that includes materials from the Malesian region (Peninsular Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, the Philippines and New Guinea) and adjacent areas (East Asia, mainland SE Asia, the Southwest Pacific). The Singapore Botanic Garden has a wide range of collections and the tour will highlight features such as the learning forest, multiple themes botanic gardens, and the national orchid collection.

Field Trip to observe Singapore’s Wild Otters @ Marina Bay

Description: Visit Marina Bay to see Singapore’s famous wild smooth-coated otters which returned to our shores to take up residence in the late 1990s. Since 2014, a few families have called the bay their home. Otterwatchers will track them the previous day to enable a good view of them hunting for fish as a family. Learn about the battle of Marina Bay between the Marina and Bishan otter families from otterwatchers and thereafter, head out to explore Singapore city.

Field Trip to Tanjung Piai National Park, Malaysia

Time: All Day

Description: Tanjung Piai in Johor State, Malaysia, is a mangrove National Park located at the southernmost tip of mainland Asia. Home to a highly diverse mangrove ecosystem, Tanjung Piai boasts a large number of mangrove tree species and diverse fauna. This trip will explore the National Park and discuss the management of this area. Tanjung Piai lies along one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world and is geomorphologically very dynamic.

Note: This trip leaves Singapore and enters the country of Malaysia. Land based visa arrangements must be made in advance by each participant. We only recommend attending this trip if your passport allows visa-free travel by land to Malaysia.
